Epson releases MovieMate 55 projector with built-in DVD player
We're not at all pleased by Epson's refusal to reveal the native resolution of its MovieMate 55, but judging by the $699 estimated street price, we'd bet it's no better than 1,024 x 768. At any rate, the 8.4-pound unit is designed more for sleepovers and summer camps than home cinema applications, as it boasts a built-in DVD player rather than a Blu-ray unit (and the resolution to match). You'll also find a pair of 8-watt speakers, 1,200 ANSI lumens, E-TORL lamp and a built-in handle for good measure. Snag one for the youngin' this October at resellers all across the land.

I would insist on releasing a floppy disk version as well, I just love those gif pictures from the 90s...
But seriously, why would they release a combo of soon-to-be-outdated DVD player? Especially as everybody's got one already...
I say fail...

DVD's the biggest thing holding Blu-ray back. For families, which is what this is marketed for, DVDs are king.
As for the native resolution, the unit should be 720x480 from what I recall.
But the DivX certification and USB flash drive support gives this one pretty high marks.

I don't think that would sell good,
mount a plasma on your car back can't be so hard, and you can see in bright day.
No seriously, If you can bring a projector, you wouldn't mind bringing your laptop.
Wait, for that price you can't even buy a MacBook and netbooks don't have DVD drives......
So... Epson is actually visionary.

Schools might snap these up

I never did like these combination units. Sooner or later one portion is gonna die or become obsolete, leaving you with a big clunky version of what remains. You can pick up a tiny DVD player for under 25 bucks these days which would go nicely with the tiny projectors you can get now.

You are all missing the point...
For the ludite crowd who get absolutely confused with hooking up anything to a projector this is a god-send. 1 remote, no cables, no screw ups, and best of all, no calls from my mom asking why she can't get the picture to show up. Built in speakers with sufficient power to feed a classroom. Score!
This is perfect for schools that are replacing legacy "TV stands" (carts with TVs and VCR/DVD players) with bigger and more versatile projectors. The USB in means taking digital content from premium online services (like UnitedStreaming) and porjecting it won't need an expensive laptop that really has just been getting used as an expensive media player.
This WILL sell to schools in good numbers.
