PS2 still outselling PS3

Old-skool console killing it in the sales stakes

Who says technology makes things better? Okay, we do. Along with the majority of the sane world. But there are exceptions apparently, as has been proven by Sony's latest sales figures, which show that its iconic PlayStation2 is still outselling new kid on the Hi-Def block, the PlayStation3.

PS3 sales topped out at an impressive 9.2million units globally for fiscal year 2008, but the PS2, despite a million unit decrease in sales from 2007, still sold a whopping 13.7million machines. That's a lot of consoles.

The PS3 represents something of a disappointment for Sony, which had revised its sales target to 9.5million, despite shifting over five million in Europe alone and overtaking the Xbox 360 in the sales standings.

Lower costs and price cuts have helped the PS3's cause, and games sales have done well at almost 58million shifted, but that doesn't seem to have hindered the plucky PS2's continuing bid for dominance, which sold a thumb-numbing 154million games, triple the number of all the other PlayStation platforms, but still a drop of 40million units on 2007. The PS3's got some big ol' smaller shoes to fill, if you see what we mean.
