LG and Samsung have announced that the two electronics giants are teaming up to develop and promote a mobile TV standard in North America. The two companies are proposing a mobile/handheld DTV standard to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC).
The formal agreement between the two companies to develop the format and technology needed for mobile TV in the US is going to be signed today. The two companies say that the mobile DTV system they propose uses the existing terrestrial digital TV broadcast bandwidth and has no impact on current DTV broadcasts and requires minimal equipment investment on the part of broadcasters.
"LG and Samsung are already world-class in digital TV and mobile communications," said LG President and Chief Technology Officer Woo Paik. "Through this collaboration, we also have an opportunity to lead the North American mobile DTV market."
